The objective of our project was to reduce electricity expenses for ONAS by using various methods and sources of energy. It was interesting to see that based on the last Fourteen months of data and by changing the subscription load or applying different factors, ONAS could straight get up to 40% savings. One other recommendation was to implement Solar system for small stations/plant and this would give ONAS 12.5% average savings per year over a period of 8 years. Implementation of IT across ONAS was also proposed helping them to reduce operational and maintenance costs.

Having received positive signals from ONAS team, recommendations were presented in the closing ceremony with the Managing Director, Mr. Lansana Gagny SAKHO of ONAS participating in the program. He received them very positively thanking the team for the work within the short duration. He requested the Technical team to look into and implement the recommendations (that do not involve any additional funding) thus leading to savings. For recommendations that need additional funding, he would work with various organization & bodies that could extend grant in supporting the project work.

Wow, 3 weeks are over!

Fifteen members from 12 different countries got together on Oct 6, 2018 to be part of IBM Corporate Service Corps (CSC) program and work on various projects (for 4 weeks) across Five different Departments of Government of Senegal.

As we were in Week 3, each member of all the sub-teams were busy either compiling and analyzing the knowledge gained in the past 2 weeks or working on the final presentation for the closing ceremony on Nov 2, 2018 at Terrou-Bi Hotel, Dakar.

For me and the team supporting ONAS (National Office of Sanitation of Senegal), we started week 3 on a good note discussing on our earlier meeting with the Managing Director of ONAS and his focus areas…. but all of a sudden, we had a setback in the overall game plan. This did not deter us from continuing to work (took a U-turn) though we spoke on the setback few times.

On Thursday Oct 25, after 12 hours of hard work (divide and conquer), we had the initial version of the final presentation along with supporting document with details (observation, analysis and conclusion). We were unsure on how it would be received by ONAS team as we got into review on Friday morning. It was a very interactive meeting with ONAS team diving deep into details to get a better understanding of our recommendations. Finally, the ONAS team accepted our recommendations commending our work performed in 2 weeks of time. With a sigh of relief, we headed back to the hotel for our weekly Friday meeting. We knew we are now out of the woods :)

Being back on track with smiling faces, we enjoyed the last travel outside Dakar city, to Bandia Reserve Forest Park, 65 kms from Dakar. The team of 15 had great experience driving (safari) through the 3,500 hectares forest experiencing closeness with the nature and animals. To enhance the visit, we were led by a specially trained guide who is matchless in his ability to spot the animals in the thick forest.

Between 15th to 19th century, it was the largest slave trading center on the Africa coast. It is estimated that 2 Million Africans were shipped or passed through the island to work in the plantations in Europe and the Americas. Ruled earlier by Portugese, Dutch, English and French, it continues to remind us of human exploitation (slave trading). As I understand, 1.2 to 2.0 Million Africans died during the transport.

The original temple Thirukkadaiyur Mayanam now called Thirumeignanam built in 11th Century AD was ravaged by sea and is in ruins now.

One other temple with an identical plan was built and is now visited by people praying for long life.
Yama (the lord of death) tried to snatch the life of the boy. Markandeya went to the temple and clutched at the Shiva Lingam in a bid to escape death. Lord Shiva pleased by boy's belief rescued him from death, incarnating him as Kalantaka (ender of death). 60th, 70th and 80th birthday worships are very famous in the temple. Abhirami Amman temple is located inside the Amrithakadeswar temple. Amman facing towards east.
